I just posted this in my personal journal. Hi, I'm new and I've just been in the most nostalgic mood lately. So I was really excited to find this community (I'm so gonna advertise in my journal!)
mysteena and I were talking about music back in the old days. REM, They Might Be Giants, the Goo Goo Dolls before they were Top 40 pop. You know, the good stuff.
So I busted out my box of tapes and popped in some of my good old music.
First I listened to Shakespeare Sisters - "STAY". That song is so COOL! Even now I was all, "Hmmm...gotta find that on Itunes or Napster or something." I love it. They were like Evanescence before Evanescence was even born. JMHO.
Then I put in Bryan Adams "(Everything I Do) I Do it for You". Wow. Now there is a girly love song if there ever was one. Every time I hear it my heart harkens back to the days of my crush on my then BF Jim - his dad was our base chapel's Chaplain. His mom and dad took us to see that terrible Kevin Costner Robin Hood movie - but Jim and I (hee hee hee - Gemini - that's what we would say) loved that terrible movie. We spent the rest of that summer tagging along with my mom to work in the evenings and walking across the street from Enterprise State Junior College in Enterprise, AL to the College Cinemas and watched all kinds of movies. We watched, and subsequently bawled, some horrible Julia Roberts film in which she becomes a friend/nursemaid/lover to a guy who was dying from cancer. And then we watched, and bawled some more, during Bill and Ted's Bogus Adventure (it was just that bad). Then after the movies we would go back to ESJC and sit in the cafeteria while my mom finished her class and we would spend a crap load of money on the juke box and dance in the cafeteria. He had taught me how to jitterbug in the aisles of our church, so it was fun to have more room in the cafeteria.
Then I went on search for my favorite of all They Might Be Giants tapes - the one with Particle Man and Istanbul, Not Constantinopal (horrible spelling) and come to find out it's GONE!!! So I settled for REM's Out of Time with Losing My Religion and Happy Shiny People. Now that brought back some memories. That cd (tape for me) came out when mysteena moved across town to another town and another school and my heart was breaking because she was my best friend and she was leaving! She would come over on weekends and we would read my back issues of Sassy Magazine and pour over the lyrics for Out of Time and think that Michael Stipe was a lyrical genius. We could care less that he was gay and probably didn't even know he was. So tonight I'm listening to it and the same feelings I got when I listened to it then I had now. It's nice to know that REM's music can stand the test of time. I remembered all the words to all the songs (I'm surprised the tape is still playable because I listened to it endlessly). I love it. I'm gonna have to find it on CD.
Hey, if anyone else has They Might Be Giants cd with Particle Man, Istanbul Not...forget it, it's insulting I don't know how to spell the old Istanbul city's name, Bird in Your Hat and the TMBG's theme song, please, please, please burn me a copy and send it to me. My heart is broken that I don't have it. Just broken. I have everything before that one and Apollo 18 after it - but it's just not the same.
